First of all, it was yamsing cold in the battle hall. Second of all, I didn’t want to time stall and protect for the 100% win in game 2 because a) it was on both the US and Japanese streams with probably a combined 20k+ people watching last year in top 4 Ruben had one of the games against me 100% won me if he would have time stalled and protected but he didn’t.
Now to talk about what you came here for. Compared to my worlds team last year with Gothitelle, Bold Thundurus, and Escavalier, this team is a lot more standard. I’ve got 2 fast dragons with good resistances, and a slow TR portion of the team with Cress, Meta, and TTar. The Cress set is pretty standard. The 180 SpAtk EVs let it OHKO 4 HP Salamence 100% of the time. Swagger sets up for a Metagross sweep in TR as well as acts as a defensive move against special attackers.
Steel types are a must in this metagame with all the dragons. Whether you chose Metagross, Scizor, or Heatran was up to what team you were using. I like Metagross the best and he fit into my team seamlessly. Having Metagross and Cress in the back for a late game clean up sweep in TR can change the momentum of a game completely. The moves are standard. I used Earthquake over Bullet Punch because I expect to be going first in TR and I need to hit other Metagross hard. 252 HP and 4 Def let it always survive +2 Metagross Earthquakes. The Attack EVs let it OHKO 252 HP / 4 Def Rotoms at +2 with Zen Headbutt.
Hydreigon is my favorite, and in my opinion, the best dragon. It’s unique resistances pair really well with the Cresselia/Metagross duo. The speed EVs are to speed creep neutral natured max speed base 100s (and 102).
Garchomp has a slightly unique set. Just as Hydreigon’s speed EVs were to speed cress base 100s/102, Garchomp’s speed EVs accomplish the same. The 36 HP / 196 SpDef and the 116 Attack are to maximize the chances of living Dragon Gem Draco Meteors from Latios while OHKOing Latios with Dragon Claw. Sub is for outpredicting vs dragons and ground weak pokemon (and for swagger/sand veil if it came to it).
Tyranitar is a little different than most. Mine lacks Crunch in favor of Fire Punch. I felt my team was pretty Scizor weak, so I wanted to add Fire Punch as a semi-check for Scizor. Luckily I didn’t face a single Scizor (I must have faced 4 or 5 HP Fire Cress though). The 36 Def lets him always survive Metagross Meteor Mash. The 124 Attack lets him always OHKO Scizor. I put the leftover EVs in SpDef to let him switch into Thundurus, Salamence, Hydreigon, etc better.
Rotom-W was the Pokemon I used the least. I brought him against teams where the middle speed tier where he lies was able to outspeed most of their team, or if they had a rain team. The speed lets him outspeed Modest 252 speed Kingdra out of rain (The 0 speed IV Tyranitar has lets it get sand up against min speed Politoed). The HP and SpDef let it survive LO Kingdra Draco Meteors. It already had enough special attack from holding Choice Specs, so I didn’t feel I needed much SpAtk investment. HP Grass is for Gastrodon since he walls my other attacks. Thunder was purely for rain teams, since I never used Trick when I had it.
All in all the team I used was pretty standard, but it worked really well and I felt like it had a lot of synergy. I had a few unique sets just for the current metagame which helped. Scizor is the only pokemon I was really scared of playing, but no team in this metagame is flawless, mine included. Hopefully some of you reading this learned a bit about how I think the game, and I will try to come up with something cooler next year like I did in 2011.
Also if anyone wants to upload this to youtube and do a story on the me vs matty rematch (like was done with skarm vs crobert) here is the BV: 81-97441-74744
Or if you guys think it's a better idea to combine it with my team article then do that instead.
