1971: Joined butoh research group Tenshi-kan.
1977: Solo debut with Lilac Garden. Started presenting her work in Japan and overseas. Her major works include Sokudo no Hana (Tokyo, Seoul), Father (Russia, Rumania, London, New York, Canada, Tokyo), Kizahashi de Odoru (San Francisco, Tokyo, Osaka), Land Dreams (Shizuoka, USA, Tokyo, Brazil, India) and Songs (Tokyo).
1990: Founded Biwakei.
Setsuko Yamada is a Professor in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Kyoto University of Art and Design.
Setsuko Yamada's dance work, which originated in the practice of butoh, has been presented through many performances not only in Japan but also in Europe, Canada, the U.S.A. and Korea, and has received accolades as a unique style of contemporary dance.
In addition to performing her own new works, she continues to work enthusiastically on choreography, international exchange, workshops and collaborations with artists of other genres.
While active as a solo artist, Setsuko Yamada also creates and choreographs works for her dance company Biwakei.
Setsuko Yamada plans to continue her activities with regard to the next generation of dancers and the future of dance.
