Profile
1970: Born in Kyoto in 1970. Began studying Nihon Buyoh (Japanese classical dance) at the age of sixteen. From the age of twenty-three until thirty-two, Wakai studied Kanze the school of classical Shimai dance.
1991: In the process of studying classical dance and observing dance performances in other forms, Wakai began to envision creating his own performances. For 3 years, until 1994, he joined the performances of Mushimaru Fujieda's Mushimaru Dokugi as an assistant and dancer.
Wakai attended the workshops of Toru Iwashita for five years, and in 1996 began to cultivate his own dance style.
1993: Began solo activity. Performed solo pieces without music for 6 years in Kyoto.
In 1998, began performing works with music in the Kansai area.
Concepts and Goals
His work is mainly solo and performed on a bare stage with only the movements of his dancer's body. Wakai's primary focus is solo work, and he has performed on barren stages utilizing only his body and unique talents.
Based on an understanding of Japanese classical dance, Wakai is working towards the development of an original dance style.
His body uses the language which "only dance can properly express."
He gives solo dance performances several times a year at small venues.
Future Plans
Hiroto Wakai is actively seeking opportunities to perform both new and previous works, regardless of the type of venue or space available, and to work collaboratively with other artists, in an attempt to expand the dance world.
