Biwakei was founded in 1990 by Setsuko Yamada.
1999: Presented Yume Miru Tochi (Land Dreams).
2001: Yukiko Amano received the Labo Award at ST Spot for Purplele and the Audience Award at the Toyota Choreography Award for C◎NPEIT◎.
2002: Yukiko Amano and Yun Myung-Hee received TORII Awards for their respective solos Purplele and Aktamokta≦.
Performed Tobu Musume (Flying Girls) at Sphere Mex.
Held Dance no Hatsumei (Dance Inventions) vol. 6.
2004: Setsuko Yamada and Biwakei India Tour of Yume Miru Tochi (Land Dreams).
Premiered Aijo Ju-hachiban (Fondness = My Party Piece) at Theater Tram.
The company Biwakei employs unique dance methods and creates dance pieces of abundant imagery. While fashioning a montage of the expressive physical qualities of each dancer, Biwakei addresses in its works the possibilities of interpersonal communication.
Performances of works composed by Setsuko Yamada and various solo and small group performances are all part of Biwakei's activity.
Once or twice every year since 1998, the company has been holding the studio performances series Dance no Hatsumei (Dance Inventions), and has received wide acclaim for its fresh approach to dance.
