Profile
In 1981, Ebisu Torii and Mutsuko Tanaka left the butho company Dairakudakan and founded Buto-sha TENKEI. Based in Tokyo, they have presented a large number of butoh works.
In 1996, they toured internationally starting with a tour in North America and seven cities in Germany. They have continued to perform overseas every year ever since. Recent major works include Nocturne, Kanata and Jochu-tachi (Les Bonnes).
Since 2002, Boto-sha TENKEI has been presenting Series Aqueous, a series of small performance works.
Concepts and Goals
Ebisu Torii (direction, choreography and set design) and Mutsuko Tanaka (solo dance) form the base of butoh ensemble Buto-sha TENKEI.
Through their exploration of a body expression, they are creating a dance filled with vital energy and rich in Japanese culture.
Buto-sha TENKEI’s works have a unique quality like a picture book for adults, full of illusion, cruelty and humor, and are referred to collectively as Kioku no Numa no Monogatari (A Tale of the Swamp of Memories).
Future Plans
Buto-sha TENKEI hopes to perform abroad and in Japan.
