After several years of experience participating in Katsura Kan's butoh workshops, Kiyoko Yamamoto decided to found her own group. Starting with a workshop in Chiang Mai, Thailand in early 2001, Takasago Butoh Co-op had its debut performance in June the same year and then participated in the production and performance of Katsura Kan's Kimyo na Sakana (Curious Fish) at Edinburgh Festival Fringe later that summer. The company is currently presenting one new independently produced work per year and also participates in local festivals with short pieces. Short-term intensive workshops are generally being held once a month.
Major works: Tsunami, Sazanami, Donburako and Takasago Fudoki
Butoh is a way of restoring the senses of identity and body that slip away in our everyday lives. Finding each of our individual rhythms, movements and realities, and allowing movement to emerge from the subconscious, we discover thrilling, enthralling worlds of dance rippling with vital energy. Bringing out the internal climate from within oneself, and oneself in the natural climate one lives in each day . . . oneself as the climate itself. We are establishing ways of expressing the dance that exists within everyone.
To continue with independently produced performances and street-corner debuts and to keep on dancing right here and now while exploring open and enjoyable ways of butoh expression.
- Bring out the wriggling inside you through Katsura Kan butoh and contact improvisation techniques.
