Profile
Akiko Tachiki is a graduate of Keio University and Western Michigan University (U.S.A.).
Dance training: Tachiki studied classical ballet from childhood until entering university and later studied basic American modern dance technique both in Japan and in the U.S.A. Throughout her career, she has continued to research dance and other performing arts, including traditional Japanese theater and dance forms.

Major Publications
Akiko Tachiki writes for dance magazines such as Dance Magazine and DanceArt, as well as for Theater Arts(a theater criticism magazine) and other general publications.
Akiko Tachiki is the correspondent in Japan for German dance magazine ballet tanz.
She is the translator of Sharing the Dance - Contact Improvisation and American Culture by Cynthia J. Novack (Japanese title: Contact Improvisation - Kokan Suru Shintai, Filmart-sha Co. Ltd, 2000).
Dance-related Activities

  • Member of planning committee for the 1st Conference for Asian Women and Theater.
  • 1997: Participated in the Triangle Arts Project exchange program involving dancers, critics and producers from Japan, Indonesia and the U.S.A.
  • Participated in and lectured at Ex...it'99 (an international butoh art project held in Germany) as a representative from Japan.
  • Organized the Visiting Theater Critique symposium series throughout Japan, encouraging discussion between dancers and critics on dance and criticism.
  • Gave a dance appreciation workshop sponsored by Matsuyama City.
  • 2002: Participated in and lectured as a dance critic from Japan at the Asia-Europe Dance Forum.
  • Served as member of the editorial board for Theater Arts and was responsible for editing issue 10, “Nudity: The Current State of the Body” and issue 17, “On the Truthfulness of the Body”.
  • 2003: Served as a judge at Kuopio International Choreography Competition in Finland.
  • 2004: Gave lectures at the Community Dance Artist Training Course “The Possibilities of Dance Performance”.
  • Presented lecture “Finnish Dance: Past and Present” at Aoyama Performing Arts Seminar 2004.
  • Served as a judge at Ballet Competition 21 in Nagoya.
  • Translated Mario Fratti's play Blindness (Japanese title: Momoku). Japan premiere directed by Yoji Sakate.

Akiko Tachiki is a member of Japanese Society for Dance Research, the Dance Critics Association, and the International Association of Theater Critics (AICT). She also serves on the board of Japan Dance Forum (JaDaFo).
