Profile
Tatsuro Ishii is a graduate of Keio University Literature Department.
Appointments prior to his current position include University of Hawaii, Department of East Asian Languages (lecturer, 1972 - 74) and New York University Graduate School, Departments of Drama (visiting scholar, 1979 - 81) and Performance Studies (visiting scholar, 1987 - 89).
In the 1970s, Ishii began writing about American avant-garde, 'alternative' theater, contemporary dance and other subjects.
Since the 1980s, Ishii has been conducting fieldwork on shamanism, religious festivals, traditional performing artists and acrobats and other concerns in South Korea, China, India, Indonesia and elsewhere. He has been active writing about dance, circus, sexuality, film and body culture since the 1990s.
