Profile
Yoko Shioya, who was born in 1960 in Tokyo, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in musicology and dance history, from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Since moving to New York City in 1988, Shioya has contributed articles on the arts as a social issue to numerous major Japanese publications, including The Asahi Shimbun and The Sankes Shimbun newspapers and AERA Weekly Journal. Recognized in Japan as a researcher for the public and private arts support systems in the U.S., she has been a guest speaker for symposiums, lectures and television programs. Shioya joined the Performing Arts Program of Japan Society in New York City in 1997, became departmental director in 2003, and was appointed as Artistic Director of the performing arts section and the film section in 2006.

Dance-related Activities
Yoko Shioya has served as a selection committee member of New York Bessie Award since 2004. In 2006, Shioya became Artistic Advisor of Outer/Space Creative Residency Program organized by Dance Theater Workshop (DTW). As Artistic Director of the Performing Arts Program of Japan Society, she carries out the following projects:

  1. Presents Japanese contemporary dancers/companies in New York City on a yearly basis, and organizes

their U.S. tours;

  1. The U.S.- Japan Choreographers Exchange Residency project, co-produced with JCDN; and
  2. Presents contemporary dance workshops for New Yorkers, who are based in Japan as well as New York, with Japanese choreographers.
