Facility Description:
Aoyama Theatre's main stage structure includes 24 small risers, a sliding stage and a rotating stage. The Aoyama Round Theatre stage is made up of 44 independently movable risers. The performance areas of both theaters are adaptable to a wide variety of performance needs.
1985: Theatre spaces opened. Focusing on contemporary dance and ballet, held the Aoyama Ballet Festival showcase of young talent continuously for fifteen years.
1989: Performance of [KOK] by R使ine Chopinot.
1991: Hosted Japan Platform of Rencontres Chor使raphiques Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis.
2002: Inaugurated Dance Biennale Tokyo.
Aoyama Theatre and Aoyama Round Theatre programs make full use of an international network of theater spaces and festivals in order to revitalize the dance scene in Japan, expand its base and stimulate deeper relationships through creative activities arising from the introduction of performing arts from around the world.
:Dance Biennale Tokyo
A biennial gathering of groundbreaking contemporary dance creators and others, the first event was held in August 2002 and continued in November 2004 and then November 2006. Many programs are planned, including performances, emerging artist showcase events, workshops, forums and dance workshops for young people. More than 120 artists and 16 companies from 11 countries are expected to participate.
:Korea/Japan Dance Contact
Theatre Zero (Seoul) and Aoyama Round Theatre have been partners from the planning stages of this program since 2003 and have been launching dance projects that reflect the concerns of our time via interlinking these theatres in joint creation and production. This is a cooperative joint project that aspires to stimulate deeper creative relationships and activities between emerging artists from Korea and Japan.
:Aoyama Performing Arts Seminars
More than twenty workshops and forums concerning dance, theatre, music and multimedia arts are programmed annually. Dance forums in 2004 have dealt with dance festivals in Finland, Israel and Eastern Europe. A wide variety of programs for young people, the general public and experienced artists are held as well, including choreography, dance technique and ballet workshops, encounters with foreign artists and working with music, object theatre and musical theatre.
