History / Profile
Japan Society, America’s leading resource on Japan, is a private, nonprofit institution founded in New York in 1907. Japan Society promotes understanding and cooperation between Japan and the U.S. through a full range of programs in Global Affairs, Arts & Culture and Education. Society programming creates rich encounters and exchanges that increasingly reflect the broader Asian and global context of the U.S.-Japan relationship.
Concepts and Goals
The Performing Arts department was established in 1953. A wide variety of performing arts has been presented to the American public over the years, ranging from traditional arts (noh, kyogen, bunraku, kabuki, nihon buyoh, gagaku, hogaku and folk performing arts) to contemporary dance, theater and music. The Program also organizes North American performance tours and Japanese-American collaborative art projects and is actively engaged in the commissioning and presentation of new work.
Future Plans

  • To promote U.S.-Japan joint programs cooperatively with presenters in regional city theaters and other venues throughout Japan.
  • To produce collaborative programs between Japan and the U.S.
  • To organize joint creation projects with artists from non-performing arts disciplines (e.g., composers, set designers, painters and writers).
  • To produce and release DVD documents of the performances presented at Japan Society.

Current and Continuing Programs
Performance:Eleven or twelve programs are carried out yearly. A theater season is programmed every fall (September to December) and a dance and music season every spring (January to May). Most dance events are held during the spring season.
PerformanceWorkshopOutreach:Educational Outreach
Workshops, lectures, demonstrations and symposiums for high school, university and graduate school students are planned and carried out in tandem with performances. Dance workshops for New York residents are held three or four times annually with guest instructors of butoh and contemporary dance.
Other program:U.S. - Japan Choreographers Residency Exchange Project
Several dancers selected from Japan and the U.S. carry out four- to five-week residency projects in each other's countries. Through this experience, artists can deepen mutual understanding of their differences in performing arts and culture and move towards building their own networks.
Other program:Commissions for American Artists
American artists are commissioned to create new works and are offered opportunities to study Japanese arts in order to broaden their artistic horizons.
