History / Profile
Art Complex 1928 opened in 1999. It has hosted dance performances by Condors and Nouveau Cirque Company, has provided funding for long-run performances, and has been managing the Artist-in-Residence in Kyoto (AIR-Kyoto) accommodation space. As of 2005, a new space in Osaka called black chamber is being operated as well.
Concepts and Goals
Art Complex 1928 plans and supports works of theater, dance, music, video and other media-based spectacles in hopes of transforming the arts of the stage as a whole in the direction of more comprehensive performance forms.

Current and Continuing Programs
Performance: black chamber Production Launch
black chamber was opened in fall 2005 as part of an art space complex being envisioned for the site of the former Namura Shipbuilding plant in the Kitakagaya district of Osaka. This new space has a hall with a capacity of up to 150 people and also features a gallery, a workshop, a bar-counter area and other facilities.

Performance: Cultural Project Support Fund
This fund has been established so that the Angel System will take root and continuation of performances supported through this system will be possible. Funds are collected via public contribution and are used to cover necessary pre-show production expenses. The goal of this program is to present high-quality performance works to large numbers of people. November 2003: Kyupi Kyupi Fund (12% share) / April 2004: Denyu Fund (8% share)
Performance: Condors - Special Appearance in Kyoto
Ever since the Condors performance for Art Complex 1928's opening celebration, this dance company's annual Kyoto shows have been an established tradition. The seventh performance, Berlin 2006, was held in December 2005.
Other program: Artist-in-residence in Kyoto
An accommodation facility for artists from far away (both overseas and around Japan) who are giving performances or creating work during their stay.

  • Long-term stays are possible at low rates (starting at 1,500/night).
  • Retreat-style workshops, in which participants study while living cooperatively with the instructor, are organized for the AIR-Kyoto space, which is located north of Kyoto’s Nijo Castle.
  • AIR-Namura, a second accommodation facility, is currently being set up next to black chamber.

Other program: Publication of P.A.N. Press
P.A.N. Press, a free publication from Performing Arts Network, contains performing arts-related critical writing, performance information and Sozo to wa Nanika (What is Creation?), a series of interviews with artists by producer Keito Kohara. A collection of these interviews, Kurieta Gojunin ga Kataru Sozo no Genten (Interviews with 50 Creators) was published by Ronsosha in book-form in 2005.
