Example: THBT the US should invade Syria
The question is whether the statement is true from the perspective of a neutral observer (and not from the perspective of X).
Even though phrased as an analysis, there is a policy implemented.
Expected definitions, e.g. which kind of invasion you support
THP
“(THP) This House Prefers a World in which…”
Example: THP a World in which all people have superpowers
The question is whether the statement is true.
Opp has to compare to S.Q. (our current world)
Opp cannot invent a new world to compare to!
E.g. only good people have superpowers
The abstract: X>Y. Thus proving Z>X is meaningless.
(THP) This House Prefers X over Y”
Example: THP ABP over WUDC.
The question is whether the statement is true.
Opp has to compare Y to X
Opp cannot invent a new item to compare to!
E.g. Heaven is better than both ABP and WUDC.
The abstract: X>Y. Thus proving Z>X is meaningless.
THR
(THR) This House Regrets…
Example: TH Regrets organized religion.
We ask whether the world would have been a better place without the existence of what it is that we are regretting
We have the benefit of hindsight
We need to describe how an alternative world would look, can’t assume that without it all people will be in a long meaningful relationship
TH, as X
Actor Motions: TH, as X,…
Look at the debate from the perspective of X and don’t ask what is necessarily best for the world (have the values, knowledge and interests of the specified actor)
Example: TH, as the US, Would Intervene in Syria;
Example2: TH, as a Parent, Would not Send their Children to a Private School
Common mistake:
THBT X Should is not an actor Motion. E.g. THBT parents should not send their children to private schools
Note we can still claim that the interest of the parent are prioritized, but this time we need to convince a neutral observer of that.
