This feature is designed both to encourage people to take faster turns where possible, while also providing more total time when needed for those particularly complex late game board states. Please note that the UI for this feature is temporary, as we wanted to get it into testing as quickly as possible. Let us know what you think!

New Feature - Time Bank!
Max turn time reduced to 75 seconds, down from 90.
Critical turn time now begins at 25 seconds, down from 30.
Ending your turn while you have more than 25 seconds left will bank time, with more time being banked the more available time you have when you end your turn.
A maximum of 5 seconds can be banked per turn.
The bank can store a maximum of up to 30 seconds at a time.
If you have any time available in your bank when your turn time reaches zero, it will begin to drain the your time bank instead of ending your turn.

HUD

The End Turn button’s underlying timer has been improved to measure the latency between the client and server, providing a more accurate timer with slower connections.

UI

The quantity text is now automatically selected when clicking the Change Quantity button in the store to make typing in a new number easier.

Bug Fixes

Fixed some fallout from last week’s uncontrollable change that caused an issue when uncontrollable units wouldn’t attack adjacent targets in some circumstances.
Fixed a bug where Crystal Queen wouldn’t transform targets she killed with her attack.
Boxes earned while in the Treasury (via achievements, for example) now update the UI.
Fixed a rare crash on startup when the client is unable to initialize the Steam SDK.

Patch Notes - Week 46 (2017/6/22)

Card Changes

Crystal Queen’s transform effect will now occur simultaneously when attacking another Crystal Queen (both attackers are transformed).
All placeholder-model Primals will now have the Primal mark attached to them.

Map Changes

Mana crystals will no longer spawn on tiles that are within the default movement range of the enemy’s summoning region.
Mana crystals will no longer spawn within one or two tiles of the hero’s starting tile.
Overworld
Restored shadows in the Overworld level.

HUD

Turn History
Hungry Gnarbek’s deploy tooltip now shows the card that was discarded.
Stone Prison’s deploy tooltop now shows the target that was encased in stone.
Stellar Replica’s deploy tooltip now shows the target that was copied.
Requisitions Order’s deploy tooltip now shows the selection that was chosen.

After collecting additional mana for the turn from a crystal, the UI will display the current mana value as greater than total mana (ie. 2/1 instead of 2/2).
Duplicate cards in the Graveyard UI will now be collapsed into one visual card with a count.

Core Tech

Steam SDK
Shardbound will now make multiple attempts to initialize the Steam SDK if it fails.
The error dialog that is displayed when the Steam SDK fails to initialize has been updated to point to the Shardbound.com/help page.

Steam Store

Errors reported from Steam when initiating a purchase are now presented to the user in a dialog box, instead of failing silently.
When a Steam purchase is in progress, the client will check to make sure the Steam overlay opens. If it does not, it will present the user with a dialog box explaining how to fix the problem.
Disallow the user from clicking the purchase button multiple times. This was resulting in the user getting rate limited by the Steam API, causing the purchase to fail.
In-Match Reconnect
The client will remain in-game attempting to reconnect for 220 seconds before abandoning the game. This replaces the previous behavior which would return you to the Overworld after 40 seconds and then relied on you to manually reconnect.
The amount of latency you need to be considered disconnected has been increased from 1.5 seconds to 2.

UI

When returning from being AFK, taking an action will now cancel out of extremely short turn-length and return the user back to their normal turn time.
If you have remaining actions when your turn time hits 0, you will now be given a very short window in which to complete those actions before your turn ends.

Bug Fixes

Removed the Primal keyword explanation from Osprey Soldier, Deadeye and Captain.
Uncontrollable cards now target cards based on route distance, not raw distance. Fixes a few rare cases where enemies blocked by walls were chosen instead of a closer choice.
Fixed draws not reporting rank changes to the client.
Fixed a rare null reference crash that could occur during the mulligan phase.

Patch Notes - Week 45 (2017/6/14)

New Feature: Mana Crystals

We’re excited to add a new experimental gameplay change to the game this week. Players will now be able to collect Mana Crystals during the start of the match, as follows:
Player 1 will have a Mana Crystal spawn somewhere within their hero’s movement range.
If a friendly unit ends their movement on this tile, the crystal is consumed and the player receives an additional mana for that turn. Deploying a unit on the tile also consumes it.
The crystal can be used on Turn 1 or saved for a future turn.
If an enemy ends their movement on one of your Mana Crystals, it is destroyed!
Destroying an enemy Mana Crystal denies your opponent of bonus mana, but generates NO mana for you.
Player 2 receives TWO mana crystals on their first turn, one appearing within movement range of their hero, and a second crystal elsewhere in their deploy zone.
These three mana crystals are the only ones to spawn for the entire game, but have a dramatic impact on mana usage and positioning for the first few turns of the game. We’re looking forward to your feedback!

Canal now resolves more quickly when Canaling units across longer distances.

Ranked

Developer’s Note: We are making some tweaks to the formulae used in Ranked play’s Valor calculations. The intention of these changes is to more accurately reflect the relative skill of the two players, while reducing how punishing it is to be matched with players significantly under your skill.
Valor adjustments are now based on a continuous function rather than having the 2x multiplier. The multiplier functionality has been removed.
Valor adjustment have been tuned to reduce the spread between the highest and lowest change to approximately 10-40, from approximately 10-60.
Win streaks have been added if you have won 3 games in a row. Points awarded will vary based on rank, phasing out after Gold rank.
Added a replacement string for “No Valor Change” instead of “+0 Valor”.

Map Changes

A number of lights have been updated to use static lighting which will result in a minor performance improvement for users at Medium and High settings.
Options Menu
Added a new graphics quality setting for Resolution Scaling. This was previously set automatically based on the Quality setting, and is now able to be set manually. Users on older hardware can see very significant framerate improvement by scaling this down, at the expense of visual quality.

Core Tech

In-match reconnect
The visual indicator for reconnect will now appear earlier.
Triggering a reconnect is now more aggressive when you are interacting with the game than when you are idle.
Telemetry has been added to collect reconnect information. This will be used to tune how aggressively the game will reconnect, with the goal being to balance reconnecting as fast as possible with minimizing disruptions.
Fixed an issue where you could get stuck on the “confirm mulligan” screen until the timeout if disconnected right when clicking that button.

UI

Recipients of a duel request can now see the selected map, turn time and start order.
The character limit for deck names has been increased to 26, up from 15.
The card bar item for decklists now has icons for artifact and spell cards.

Bug Fixes

Fixed a graphics device crash that occurred on some older video cards when loading into Reaver’s Mire or Embassy Gardens (the Prologue mission level). Specifically, this addressed a crash that occurred while using a Radeon HD 6450.
Fixed a bug causing a right-click when moused over the ability icon under a unit to commit the action instead of cancelling it when using drag controls.
Fix for orphaned UI elements and models when transitioning into Profile screen from other screens.
Fixed some cases of transparency popping in the overworld and Reaver’s Mire.

Patch Notes - Week 44 (2017/6/7)

Patch Notes #44 - Reconnect improvements & Valor rank icons update

Ranked Play

Noble players will now have their Leaderboard rank displayed on the Overworld menu instead of their Valor value.
Player Profile
Added Right-Click context menu to access player profiles from the Match History and Leaderboards.

VO

Petra now has unique lines for Requisitions Order.
Trauma Guard now has unique voice lines when played on a full health or very low health hero.

Core Tech

In-match reconnect is now much more reliable!
Added a visual indicator when the client is attempting to reconnect.
If an action is primed when a disconnect occurs, that state is now maintained and the action is able to be completed upon reconnect.
In rare cases where an in-match reconnect is not possible, a full game reload and reconnect will trigger automatically.
Greatly improved the ability to collect and process match data to support ongoing tuning and balance efforts.

UI

Valor rank icons have been updated with more distinct colors.
Many bug fixes to text alignment and small visual polish items.

Bug Fixes

Fixed a rounding error that could cause your displayed Valor points to be off by one on the Profile and Shardfall screens.
Fixed a bug with Visefang Primal that would cause it to remain incorrectly unbuffed after injured enemies unburrow.
Vengeful Veteran’s rarity has been set to Basic to match the Novice Knight.
Fixed tile lighting in Reaver's Mire at Low quality to not have a strong yellow tint.
Fixed an issue where lighting in Embassy Gardens could be broken by switching the quality setting.
Fixed an issue where Bot games could impact your matchmaking rating.
Fixing an issue where it was too easy to set an incorrect value in the Max FPS option.
Fixed an issue where models and effects could be orphaned while leaving the Store.
Enabled a proper transition directly to the Player Profile from the vault opening screen.

Patch Notes - Week 43 (2017/5/31)

Patch Notes #43 - Performance improvements, Quillblade art, and card changes!

Developer Note: This patch significantly improves performance for low-end machines running with the Potato quality setting. If you use that setting, please give us feedback on how well it is working!
We also have a new UI panel that displays recent Shardbound news. Our goal is to bring more visibility to what’s happening in the game and our community. Expect the content here to update on a regular basis.

New Art

Quillblade now has art!

Defensive Focus health increase reduced to 3, down from 4.
Rift Trickster
Stats changed to 4/5, from 5/4.

The news panel will show a red emblem when there are new items to read.
Map Changes
All maps have updated lighting, post-process settings, and other tweaks to support the new Simple Forward Rendering. Players on high settings should not notice much change, but players on Potato will have environmental shadows and more balanced lighting.
Options Menu
A new Low graphics setting has been added. Players that previously used Potato, and were happy with the framerate, may want to consider switching to Low for improved quality.

Core Tech

As part of ongoing tuning, the math for Valor gains and losses has been updated to be more in line with expectations. This includes:
Double or Halved Valor changes can now scale instead of being fixed at 10/60.
A small number of bonus points can be awarded for players that are winning a lot at the lower ranks.
Wins and losses are more symmetrical, so you should no longer win 20 points but lose 22 points against the same player.
Both Low and Potato graphics settings use the new Simple Forward Rendering setting. This should result in improved frame rates and, in some cases, improved visuals.

UI

The player profile has been moved into the new Profile section. It now resides under the Statistics header.
The Statistics section has added widgets for your current Valor and faction usage. Note: Faction usage will begin tracking this patch, so all players will have 0 games played initially.
A search widget has been added to the Statistics section allowing you to look up other player’s stats without knowing their #number.

Bug Fixes

Fixed a bug where scrolling in the Barracks could cause cards to be stuck on screen.
Fixed a bug where you’d get stuck in game if the Valor Update data could not be displayed.
Fixed a bug where the client would display a premature rank up if your rating would round up to the threshold for that rank.

Lowering this value is useful to conserve battery power or reduce heat generation.

  2. Each achievement will grant in game rewards. Some will even grant additional rewards as you make progress. These rewards are listed in the Profile in game.
  3. Players will not be granted retroactive progress on achievements to keep everyone on an even playing field, so you may be the first to claim one!
  4. A portion of Basic cards are now unlocked by completing achievements. Players who started playing Shardbound before this patch are granted those cards automatically, so they do not need to be unlocked.
For new players, Simple decks have been adjusted to not include these locked cards.
  5. The achievement rewards are intended to quickly provide new players with cards, so they are replacing the 30 Core Set Box grant for new players. Existing players will get to keep the 30 boxes because we like you :)

  2. There are 24 rewards available each month. Each daily login will claim one reward, and a new set of 24 will be given at the end of each month.

  1. Every three wins will grant an additional Core Set Box.
  2. This reward may be redeemed up to three times each week, resetting Sunday night at 1 AM PDT.

Shardfall Changes

Shardfalls have undergone significant revisions based on player feedback:

  1. Shardfalls are now unique for each player, and as such other members of your house can no longer contribute to your Shardfall’s Vault Progress.
Note: The multiplayer component of Houses and the ability for House Members to help provide value to other members will be reintroduced in a new system in an upcoming patch.
  2. Pylon Rarity no longer correlates to how much value they provide, but instead represents how difficult they are to complete.
  3. Shardfalls now contain 3 Pylons, down from 5.
Two of these Pylons are guaranteed on every Shardfall, and are as follows:
    "Play a game"
    "Win a game"
The third Pylon on a Sharfall is random from a pool of different relatively difficult challenges.
  1. Vaults are no longer opened based on a variable amount of power, and are instead opened by breaking 9 discrete seals.
  2. Pylons no longer reward Vault power, and instead now will break 1 Vault seal when completed.
  3. Base Vault rewards have been lowered to account for them being completable in a much lower number of games on average with the new system.
  4. There is now a First Vault of the Day bonus, which will provide an additional reward for the first Vault you open that day.

Audio

  1. The volume of the sound effect for opening a Vault has been reduced.

Core Tech

  1. Installer: Windows prerequisites to run Shardbound (Visual Studio redistributables, universal CRT DLLs) are now distributed directly with the Shardbound client instead of relying on separate installers from Microsoft. This should help some users with older systems who previously ran into system “missing DLL” errors when launching the game (especially on Windows 7 or 8.1 systems that don’t run Windows Update regularly).

Bug Fixes

  1. Fixed an issue where the client would freeze if a card was played from a full hand that bounced a minion back to the hand (e.g. playing Tease Fate with 10 cards in hand).
  2. Fixed a bug where making an exact copy of a Lightspear Justicar would cause the new clone to gain 2 Lightspears after each attack.
  3. Fixed a bug that could cause word wrapping to incorrectly move a word to the next line for certain fonts.
  4. Pressing enter after typing your display name at new account creation now properly submits that name.
  5. Fixed a bug where the wrong player name would appear on the Victory Screen when spectating a game from Player 2’s perspective.
  6. The option to Spectate a friend is now disabled while you are an active player in a game.
  7. Fixed a bug that would cause players to disconnect at the end of a match, missing the Victory/Defeat screen

Patch Notes - Week 37 (2017/4/19)

New Art

Quartermaster now has art!

Card Changes

Developer Note: This week will be the first of a few that see changes to Packrunner (Yellow) cards. Our goal with these changes are to help differentiate playstyles of Yellow from other factions and from themselves, as well as increase Yellow’s effectiveness across the board. Expect that multiple cards per week will be tuned, reworked or simply replaced before these changes are complete. As with all aspects of Shardbound, feedback on these changes is very useful to the process.

Idol of Reckoning has been reworked into a new card: Idol of Kinship
Yellow 0/4 Artifact minion for 2.
After you summon a non-Primal minion, lose 1 health and summon a Spirit Primal next to it.

Beloved Trainer has been replaced by Rites Reader
Yellow 3/3 Melee minion for 2.
Warcry: Draw a card for each injured enemy.

Tribe Warrior has been reworked.
Yellow 3/6 Melee minion for 3.
After you summon a minion, deal 1 damage to a random adjacent enemy.

Ancient Caller has been reworked.
Yellow 2/2 Melee minion for 3.
Deathhowl: Summon 2 Spirit Primals next to this minion.

To Me! has been reworked.
Yellow Spell for 2.
Charm all friendly minions.

Thundering Giant has been reworked.
Neutral Legendary 6/9 Melee minion for 7.
Warcry: Destroy all enemy minions within 2 tiles that cost 2 or less.

Stonecall Seedling’s Angry Stones are now Uncontrollable.

Swift Strike cost increased to 3 from 2. Spirit Primals summoned increased to 2 from 1.

Pack Lord health increased to 5 from 4.

Menagerie cost reduced to 6 from 7.

Wolf Primal cost increased to 2 from 1. Stats increased to 4/3 from 3/2.

Shade Health reduced to 3 from 4.

Dancer Attack reduced to 3 from 4.

Dark Traveler will now display its gained stats as base stats (white values) instead of buffed stats (green values) to better communicate its gameplay.

Options Menu

The default graphics quality level no longer defaults to “High” for all players. New players with lower-end graphics cards should now have it set to a more appropriate lower setting by default.

Spectator

You will now always spectate games from the perspective of the player you are spectating, instead of always spectating the player who went first in the game.
Core Tech

Developer Note: We are continuing work improving performance on lower end machines, and are particularly interested in crashes due to graphics drivers hanging. The changes below may help alleviate these crashes, so we would love to hear how the patch affects you.
GPU performance for Embassy Gardens, where the Prologue takes place, has been improved by ~25% on low end graphics hardware.
GPU performance for Broken Mesa, has been improved by ~10% on low end graphics hardware.
Loading into levels is now significantly less hitchy.

UI

Server status notifications can now be pushed to the client and will show up as a ticker in the upper right of the client. This will be used to provide updates during the patching process.

API

Third party API now supports Steam login.

Bug Fixes

Fixed a bug with Lifespark’s tooltip when used on Lifelike Statue.
Fixed a bug with Fear where non-adjacent fears were slightly undervalued (resulted in occasional 1 tile fears where a longer fear would be expected).
Fixed a bug where Skywatch Dragoon would not destroy a Skyborne Crusader under rare circumstances.
Units with 0 or less health can no longer be healed (prevents zombie-Sabine).
Fix for Stormbell Adept’s death sound playing when the game is muted.
Fixed a bug where Warcrys would not play the full animation in the Card Details screen.
Fixed a bug where Flyers would move 1 tile too far in some cases when Charmed.
Shutting off the servers for maintenance will now log all players out, so certain hooligans should not be able to keep their client connected for the duration.
Fixed a bug that could cause corrupted tile and rock geometry on Broken Mesa on low end graphics hardware.

Patch Notes - Week 36 (2017/4/11)

Developer Note: Shardbound’s launch on Steam has surfaced a number of technical issues that we’ve been hard at work resolving. This patch primarily consists of those fixes, and we will continue to roll out improvements over the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, our design team has been hard at work collecting feedback about the new player experience and our progression systems. Expect to start seeing changes from that feedback in upcoming weeks as well.

•Disable voice services to avoid any performance impact, since we are not using it.

Patcher

•The patcher used to distribute the game pre-Steam will no longer be available to use. If you have not yet, please download the game from Steam at

UI

•Barracks can now be scrolled via the page up / page down keys.

•Barracks ‘show unowned’ cards option no longer resets back to default.

•Hotfix 4/6: Fixed a bottleneck that could cause slow server responses when interacting with the Twitch API.

Patch Notes - Week 35

Developer Note: Thank you everyone who helped test the progression systems we rolled out last week. We received a lot of great feedback and have some changes coming to start improving it. Here’s some of the consistent things that we heard:
•“Higher rarities in card boxes felt like they dropped too rarely. Similarly, commons felt like they dropped too often.”
•“Crafting costs felt too expensive and prohibitive.”
•“The value for selling cards felt too low.”
• “Duplicate cards being automatically converted into currency felt bad. This was exasperated by both the very high drop rate for commons and their low sell value.”
•“The initial rate of earning boxes and Chroma from Vaults is too slow for new players. Similarly, new players should have ways to construct at least one competitively viable deck more quickly than they can currently.”

Here’s the changes we’re making to the system in this week’s patch to try to address some of these concerns:

Relative Box Drop Rate Changes:
•Common drop rate reduced by ~25%.
•Rare drop rate increased by ~49%.
•Epic drop rate increased by ~61%.
•Legendary drop rate increased by ~65%.

Bad luck Prevention Changes:

Developer Note: To help prevent against unlucky streaks, every time you open a box that isn’t Epic or Legendary, the drop rate for these rarities is increased until it eventually reaches 100%, guaranteeing you one. These values are being massively increased.
•The speed at which Epic bad luck prevention builds has been doubled.
•The speed at which the Legendary bad luck prevention builds has been tripled.

Currency Changes:

Developer Note: We’re moving from a one-currency system (just Chroma), to a traditional two-currency system (Chroma and Royal Marks). This change lets us adjust costs to make crafting more accessible.
•Chroma is now just used to purchase card boxes, and will be used in the future as an alternative way to unlock any feature or item that could also be purchased with real money.
•Royal Marks are used for anything that doesn’t have a direct real money purchasing option. Currently, this is just the crafting and selling of cards.

Crafting Changes:
•The cost to craft a Rare has been reduced to 100, down from 125.
•The cost to craft an Epic has been reduced to 400, down from 500.
•The cost to craft a Legendary has been reduced to 1200, down from 2000.
•The currency returned when selling a Common has been doubled to 20% of its crafting price, up from 10%.
•The currency returned when selling a Legendary has been increased to 33% of its crafting price, up from 25%.

Changes to duplicates from boxes automatically converting to currency:
•Cards that you already own the max deckable amount of will no longer automatically convert into currency. Additionally, you can now own above the maximum deckable amount for a given card. This is in preparation of a new upcoming system which will allow you to convert a certain amount of duplicate instances of a card into something else of value, as an alternative to simply selling them.

New Art
•Quantum Turnkey now has art!

Hero Changes
•Petra •Deadly Gizmo (Poison) and Speedy Gizmo (Charge) have been removed from the Gizmo Pool.

Treasury
•The option to reselect the last box is now cleared when another box is opened.
•The unselected cards now fade out when a card is selected from a box.

•Finishing the Prologue will now award you with 30 Core Set boxes. If you have already completed the tutorial, 30 Core Set boxes will be granted to your account automatically.

•Fixed a bug that could cause the dragged card in the barracks to get stuck on screen.
•The cancel button on the “Change Quantity” dialog in the box purchase screen now actually cancels the changes.
•Fixed an issue that could cause your Shardfall to get sorted behind Twitch Shardfalls in rare cases.
•Dialog popups now sort below the Options menu.
•Fix bug preventing Escape from bringing up the Options menu during Cinematics.
•Clicking outside the Friends List now dismisses Friend List context menus.
•Tactical camera controls are now disabled during Cinematics.
•The random map selection in duels and bot matches is now actually random, instead of using the last selected map.
•Attacks that deal no damage to their target (such as a ranged attack against Shield of Durant) will now still display the target in Turn History.
•The line of sight tile preview information no longer overrides the valid attack tile preview information on a tile.
•Fix for the mouse cursor getting locked into the game client on game startup.
•Changing your preferences for matching against bots will now take effect immediately, instead of requiring matchmaking to be restarted.

Patch Notes - Week 34

This week, we’re very excited to be putting some of the final pieces of player progression into place. Please take note of some important changes to Shardbound:

You will no longer have access to every card in the game. Instead, you will need to obtain cards by opening Boxes or crafting them with Chroma.

Players will have access to all of the Boxes and Chroma they’ve obtained since Vaults went into the game.

All players will also receive a temporary grant of 100 Boxes to ensure they can thoroughly help test all of the new features going into the game this week.

These Features are new to the game this week:

The Treasury: Opening Boxes - You can open any boxes you earn in the Treasury. When you open a box, you will receive a choice of 3 cards of a randomly designated rarity. If you already have two of a card, you will have the choice of receiving a payout of Chroma instead.

The Treasury: Store - In the Treasury, you can enter the store to purchase boxes with Chroma. In a future patch, you will be able to buy Boxes or our Welcome Bundle for real currency.

The Barracks: Crafting Cards - You can now use your Chroma to craft specific cards. In the barracks, choose the card you’d like to craft and Right-Click it to view that card’s details. From the details page, simply choose to Recruit the unit or Learn the spell.

After this week of testing, we will be resetting card unlocks and refunding all boxes and chroma used during this test. The only exception will be the 100 Boxes granted this week.

Thus, with our patch next week, your collection will enter a clean state and you’ll be able to start building your collection using all of the Boxes and Chroma you’ve ever received out of Vaults.

Thanks in advance for all your help testing. Don’t sweat your unlocks too much (they’re not permanent this time) and keep earning loot out of Vaults (it IS permanent)!

Please be sure to give feedback on your experiences this week on our official Discord server, the Reddit, or our Steam Forums.

•You can now open Core Set Boxes to unlock cards.
