On the 8th of September 1944, elements of the 1st and 4th Ukrainian Front began an offensive through the Carpathian mountains with the aim of gaining their first foothold in Slovakia and supporting a resistance uprising there. What was supposed to take a handful of days dragged out into many weeks as Soviet forces ran up against stiff resistance from the 1st Panzer Army and 1st Hungarian Army. On the 25th of October, a major tank battle broke out in the valleys west of the village of Dobroslava, as Soviet forces tried to outflank remaining German positions. The fighting was fierce enough that the area came to be known as The Valley of Death.
1944年9月8日、第1、第4ウクライナ戦線の部隊はスロバキアに最初の足がかりを築くこととスロバキア国内のレジスタンスの蜂起を支援するために、カルパチア山脈を突破するための攻勢を開始した。
数日で終わる見込みの戦いは、ソ連軍がドイツ第1装甲軍とハンガリー第1軍からの強固な抵抗を受けたことによって数週間以上にまで長引いていた。
10月25日、ソ連軍が残るドイツ軍の拠点を包囲しようとしたことでDobroslava村の西の峡谷において大規模な戦車戦が勃発した。
その戦いはこの一帯が『死の谷』として知られるようになるのに十分なぐらい激しいものであった。

1944年夏以降フィンランドやルーマニア等同盟国の離脱が相次いだドイツは残る同盟国を守るべく、戦力を注ぎ込んだ。
そのため、ソ連の攻勢はある程度抑え込まれたものの、バグラチオン作戦によってすでに戦力に余裕がないドイツには最早攻勢を跳ね返しきるだけの余力はなく、必死の努力も大きな犠牲とともに無に帰していくことになった。
