15/Mar/2010

A week on from yet another fastest selling game of the year so far and the record has yet again been smashed – Square Enix’s ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ debuts at No1 on 360/PS3, split 54% PS3 and 46% 360.

The last Final Fantasy title to reach No1 was actually ‘Final Fantasy XII’, back in week 8, 2007 although this was only released on PS2. Last week’s record breaker, EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ drops to No2 (-38%) and Ubisoft drop one place to No3 with ‘Just Dance’ on Wii (-9%). Sony’s ‘Heavy Rain’ on PS3 (-8%) remains at No4 and Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ climbs one place to No5 (+11%). Also climbing one place is Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ at No6 (+2%) – the title also climbs one place in the all-time All Formats total UK market unit sellers, finally outpacing Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘GTA: San Andreas’ to claim second place, behind the UK’s biggest selling game of all time, ‘Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training’ on DS.

Also of note this week is the release of the third game in the Ben 10 series – D3P/Namco Bandai’s ‘Ben 10: Alien Force – Vilgax Attacks’ which debuts at No13 over 5 formats. Debuting right behind at No14 is THQ’s ‘Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – Chaos Rising’. Further down the Top 40 we also have Sega’s ‘Yakuza 3’ on PS3 debuting at No24. Disney’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ makes an appearance at No34 having been released last week and Sega’s ‘Sonic Classic Collection’ on DS is new at No35.

08/Mar/2010

‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ explodes into the All Formats Chart at No1 this week, honouring EA with the accolade of being the fastest selling game of the year so far.

‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ has an excellent performance, outselling the launch week of the original ‘Bad Company’ by almost 3 to 1. It also records the best ever launch for any game released this early in the year. 53% of sales went to the Xbox 360 version with 31% for PS3 and 16% for PC, topping each individual chart. Last week’s No1 ‘Heavy Rain’ slips to No4 with sales down 69% and with ‘Aliens Vs Predator’ (-61%) falling one place to No3, ‘Just Dance’ (-15%) finds itself back at No2. Sales of ‘Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing’ (+28%) speed up in their second week, propelling it from No8 to No5, ahead of ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-5%), which drops 2 places to No6. The usual suspects fill the remaining positions in the Top 10 with ‘Modern Warfare 2’ (-11%) and ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-15%) both down 2 places to No’s 7 and 8 respectively.

‘FIFA 10’ (-13%) has never been out of the Top 10 since its release and it does not look like it wants this to change, gaining one place this week, up from No10 to No9. ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (-41%) manages to hold onto a Top 10 finish, despite falling 3 places to No10. The launch of the PC version of ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ (+73%) sees it jump from No31 to No14, while there is a new entry at No23 for Square-Enix’s PC strategy title ‘Supreme Commander 2’.

Sony’s decision-based adventure game ‘Heavy Rain’ on PS3 thunders in at No1 this week, claiming Sony’s first No1 since ‘Killzone 2’ which was released this time last year.

As a result Sega’s ‘Aliens vs Predator’ slips down to No2 dropping by 38% in sales, followed by Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ (-12%) at No3. Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+9%) leaps up the chart from No9 to No4, overtaking Activision’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-17%) at No5. Nintendo claim both No6 with ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-14%) and No7 with ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (-34%). Sega’s new entry ‘Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing’ gets off to a good start at No8, ahead of Take 2’s ‘Bioshock 2’ (-56%) which has a big drop this week from No3 to No9 and EA’s ‘FIFA 10’ (-43%) which has also moved down the table from No5 to No10. Outside the Top 10 Sega’s new release in the Total War series ‘Napoleon: Total War’ debuts at No12 and Sony’s RPG ‘White Knight Chronicles’ completes the list of new entries at No35.

22/Feb/2010

2K Games/Take 2’s ‘Bioshock 2’ only survives for one week at the top of the All Formats Chart, usurped by a more modern-themed FPS from Sega in the form of ‘Aliens Vs Predator’. It is over 10 years since the original AvP was launched, but UK developer ‘Rebellion’ who worked on the original, can now claim the fastest selling game so far in 2010.

Sales of 2010’s previous fastest selling game, ‘Bioshock 2’ (on the same formats as AvP – Xbox 360, PS3 and PC) drop 71% putting it down two places to No3, behind ‘Just Dance’ which holds on to No2 with a sales increase of 55% thanks to strong half-term interest. The year may only have just begun, but we already have No1s from 5 different publishers. There is more half-term success in the form of ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (+59%) which rises 2 places to No4, while sales of both ‘FIFA 10’ (-7%) and ‘Modern Warfare 2’ (+4%) are reasonably static, leaving them down 2 places to No’s 5 and 6 respectively.

Perhaps also because of the Winter Olympics, Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’ (+76%) slaloms back into the Top 10, up 3 places to No8. Nintendo remain well represented in the Top 10 thanks to top sellers ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (+25%) at No7 and ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+11%) at No9. The Top 10 is rounded off by EA’s ‘Army of Two: The 40th Day’ (+13%) which sneaks back into the Top 10 at No10, keeping the Winter-Olympic boosted ‘Vancouver 2010’ (+274%) out of the Top 10, as it breaks into the Top 40 for the first time at No11.

15/Feb/2010

It’s no shock which title is at No1 this week as Take 2’s sequel ‘Bioshock 2’ gets off to a rapturous start.

Just like Take 2’s ‘Grand Theft Auto IV’ (which was their last No1 back in 2008), ‘Bioshock 2’ saw a Tuesday release and overtakes ‘Mass Effect 2’ as the biggest release this year so far. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ shows great legs staying at No2 again this week, followed by EA’s ‘FIFA 10’ which is up 53% in sales and has moved up two places to No3 thanks to price promotions. Activision’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ slips down to No4 while the next three places are held by Nintendo with ‘Wii Sports Resort’ at No5, ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ at No6 and ‘Wii Fit Plus’ at No7.

Last week’s No1, EA’s ‘Mass Effect 2’, has dropped down to No8 with a decrease of 58% of sales. EA’s Dante’s Inferno’ also has a heavy drop from No4 to No9, while Sega’s ‘Bayonetta’ moves in the opposite direction, up from No38 to No10.

08/Feb/2010
‘Mass Effect 2’ tops an unchanged Top 3 this week, despite a sales drop of 64% putting it within touching distance of ‘Just Dance’ (-26%) at No2.

Ubisoft’s dancing game was only 850 sales away from regaining No1, but still remains ahead of ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-12%) which just holds on to No3 in the face of competition from EA’s new release ‘Dante’s Inferno’, debuting at No4. EA’s new IP is only a tiny number of sales away from dislodging ‘Call of Duty’ at No3, but EA can claim 3 games in the Top 5 as ‘FIFA 10’ (+26%) jumps 2 places to No5. The rest of the All Formats Top 10 shuffle places amongst themselves with Nintendo’s highest charting title ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-18%) down one place to No6, ahead of Sony’s PS3-exclusive ‘MAG’ (-46%) down 3 places to No7, in its second week of release. Nintendo still manage 3 games in the Top 10 as ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (-14%) holds on to No8 while ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-36%) shows signs of flagging, down 3 places to No9. ‘James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game’ (-12%) rounds off the Top 10, a non-mover at No10 with ‘FIFA 10’ the only Top 10 game to gain sales this week.

Atari/Namco Bandai Games fail to break into the Top 10 as ‘Star Trek Online’ beams in at No11, ahead of new releases from THQ with ‘MX Vs ATV Reflex’ at No18 and EA with the latest Sims add-on ‘The Sims 3: Design & High Tech Stuff’ at No20.

EA score their first chart topper of the year on the Entertainment Software (All Prices) Top 40 as ‘Mass Effect 2’ is comfortably No1, debuting on Xbox 360 & PC.

Original ‘Mass Effect’ (highest chart position on this chart No12) was a staged release having debuted in week 47, 2007 on Xbox 360 (at No2 on the Xbox 360 Full Price Chart, held off by the 2nd week of Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed’) and then in week 23, 2008 on PC (again No2, held off by a 3rd consecutive week for Eidos’ ‘Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures’). Sales of ‘Mass Effect 2’ on Xbox 360 are almost double that achieved first time round and three times higher on PC. Ubisoft’s Wii ‘Just Dance’ only drops to No2 and actually enjoys a sales increase of 16% over last week. Activision take No3 with ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-3%) – 12 weeks and counting and it is yet to drop out of the Top 3. Sony take the only other new entry this week at No4 with ‘MAG’, short for ‘Massive Action Game’ on PS3 – an online-only FPS from Zipper Interactive, best known for a long line of PS2 SOCOM: US Navy Seals games.

Elsewhere within the Entertainment Software Chart there is nothing new to report with the usual protagonists jostling for position within the rest of the Top 10.

25/Jan/2010

Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ (-33%) continues to strut its stuff at the top of the All Formats Chart for a second week, well ahead of ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-10%) which just manages to sneak past ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-17%) to claim No2.

It is the first Ubisoft title since the original ‘Assassin’s Creed’ to hold on to the top spot for more than one week. Last week ‘Just Dance’ recorded the highest ever sales for a game in the 2nd week of the year and this week the only game to sell better in week 3 is ‘World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade’ back in week 3 2007. It is traditionally a quiet time of year for both sales and new releases and 2010 is no exception as the top sellers all jostle for position amongst themselves. The Top 10 is made up of games from only 3 different publishers this week with Nintendo still well represented with 4 titles.

‘Wii Fit Plus’ may have dropped one place to No3, but ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-12%) holds on to No5, while both ‘New Super Mario Bros.’ (-12%) and Mario Kart Wii’ (-12%) jump back into the Top 10, up 4 places to No7 and 2 places to No10 respectively. Ubisoft have two other Top 10 games with ‘James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game’ (-23%) up one place to No8 and ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ (-20%), also up one place, to No9. EA are this week’s only other Top 10 publisher as their new release from last week ‘Army of Two: The 40th Day’ (-16%) holds on to No4 - in contrast to last week’s other major new game ‘Darksiders’ (-48%) from THQ which drops out of the Top 10, down from No6 to No11. No Top 40 title manages to gain sales this week, however there is one newcomer, ‘Dark Void’ from Capcom at No33.

18/Jan/2010

In an impressive move Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ is the unlikely title to knock Call of Duty off the top spot (ending the impressive 9 week run) thanks to a huge 114% increase in sales. After debuting at No100 in the All Formats Chart 7 weeks ago it has been an unexpected hit and steadily risen to the top.

‘Just Dance’ is Ubisoft’s first No1 since ‘Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2’, which was back in March 2008. Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+0%) also outsells ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-17%) this week, retaining No2, while the colossal-selling shooter has to settle for No3. EA’s two player co-op sequel ‘Army of Two: The 40th Day’ makes it’s debut at No4 which means that Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-23%) slips one place to No5. THQ’s ‘Darksiders’ (-23%) moves up two places to No6 and Sega’s ‘Bayonetta’ (-41%) is down to No7. EA’s ‘FIFA 10’ (-34%) is at No8 and then Ubisoft holds No9 and No10 with ‘James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game’ (-17%) and ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ (-35%).

11/Jan/2010

The first week of 2010 shows no change at the top with Activision Blizzard taking a 9th consecutive week at No1 with ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-41%).

The title is currently the 3rd biggest game ever in terms of UK history unit sell-through – it actually managed this feat last week, so after just 8 weeks on sale. For the record the current No1 is Nintendo’s ‘Dr Kawashima’ on DS, released in June 2006 and No2 is Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘GTA San Andreas’, initially released on PS2 in November 2004 (Xbox and PC in 2005). Back to the present and Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ climbs 3 places to No2 (-43%), Ubisoft’s Wii ‘Just Dance’ climbs 4 places to a best-ever position at No3 (-41%) and Nintendo remain at No4 with ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-54%). There are only 2 new entries this week and both make the Top 10, starting with Sega’s ‘Bayonetta’ (360/PS3) at No5. The other is THQ’s ‘Darksiders’ (360/PS3) debuting at No8.
