24/May/2010

Rockstar/Take 2 debut at No1 with the long-anticipated ‘Red Dead Redemption’ for 360/PS3. It is the second All Formats No1 this year for Take 2 (‘Bioshock 2’ made No1 in week 6, 2010) and the first Rockstar/Take 2 All Formats No1 since ‘GTA IV’ back in week 18, 2008.

Overall sales of ‘Red Dead Redemption’ are enough to rank No11 in terms of best ever weekly sales on this particular chart (9th best in terms of 360 titles, 11th best in terms of PS3 titles). EA’s ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’ (-25%) drops down to No2 after 3 weeks on top and Ubisoft actually climb one place to No3 with perennial favourite ‘Just Dance’ (-13%). Nintendo climb 5 places to No4 with ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+20%).

Disney Interactive Studios debut at No5 with ‘Split/Second: Velocity’ for 360/PS3 and Ubisoft debut at No9 with multi-format ‘Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands’ – the film of the 2003/2004 videogame ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ has also just been released at the box office. The last of this week’s new releases is Sony’s PS3/PSP ‘Modnation Racers’, debuting at No10.

17/May/2010
‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’ (-42%) hits a hat-trick of weeks at No1 despite strong competition from 3 new games making their debuts in the Top 5 this week.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 title ‘Alan Wake’ enters at No2, only 1,000 sales behind FIFA. First announced back in 2005 and developed by Finnish Max Payne developer Remedy Entertainment, Alan Wake also tops the Xbox 360 chart almost 12,000 sales ahead of Capcom’s newcomer ‘Lost Planet 2’. Although released early (on Tuesday rather than Friday) and on both Xbox 360 and PS3, ‘Lost Planet 2’ has to settle for No3 in the All Formats Chart. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ falls to its lowest position for 7 weeks, slipping to No4 but maintaining its position as the week’s top selling Wii game despite a 19% drop in sales. EA have this week’s third new entry at No5 with ‘Skate 3’ and is the most represented publisher in the Top 10 thanks to a 5% rise in sales for ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ at No6.

Xbox 360 and PS3 newcomers ‘Lost Planet 2’ and ‘Skate 3’ enjoy most success on Microsoft’s format with 66% of sales on Xbox 360 for ‘Lost Planet 2’ and 68% for ‘Skate 3’. ‘Modern Warfare 2’ (-14%) slips down from No3 to No7 after 3 weeks of promotion at retail. Final Fantasy XIII bounces back into the Top 10 after 8 weeks outside it, up from No14 to No8, boosted by price promotions which push sales up 90%. Nintendo’s regular big hitters ‘Wii Fit Plus’ and ‘Wii Sports Resort’ fall to No’s 9 and 10 respectively. Neither title has been out of the All Formats Top 10 since they were launched in July (Wii Sports Resort) and November (Wii Fit Plus) last year. There are a large number of re-entries this week thanks to strong price promotions at retail, notably ‘Call of Duty: World at War’ back at No15, ‘Nier’ at No23, ‘Lips: I Love the 80s’ at No25, ‘Bioshock 2’ at No30, ‘Bayonetta’ at No31 and ‘Napoleon: Total War’ at No35.

  • Alan Wake sold ~12k more than LP2 360
  • Lost Planet 2 PS3 + 360 < Alan Wake
  • Lost Planet 2 PS3 - 12k at best
  • Lost Planet 2 PS3 = 33% of total sales
  • Lost Planet 2 360 = 24k at best

24k + 12k = 36k

EA’s ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’ (-34%) takes a second week at No1 and Ubisoft climb one place to No2 with ‘Just Dance’ (-7%), having just crashed through the 1m UK unit barrier last week (based on CT estimates of the total UK market).

Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ looked in danger of leaving the Top 10 for the first time since launch half a year ago ? and duly climbs 6 chart positions to No3 overall (+34%) thanks to some energetic promotions centred around the special edition versions. Nintendo climb 2 places to No4 with ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-5%) and EA re-enter the Top 5 with ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ up 3 places to No5 (+10%). Capcom debuted at No2 last week with ‘Super Street Fighter IV’ and the title now drops to No6 (-51%). Sega’s ‘Iron Man 2’ debuted last week at No20 and climbs 8 places to No12 (+58%).

Also debuting last week was Nintendo’s DS ‘Warioware D.I.Y.’ which enters the All Formats Top 40 this week at No24 (+109%). Sony’s PSP ‘Invizimals’ benefits from some price promotions, re-entering this chart at No28 (+270%).

04/May/2010

EA shoot to the top of the All Formats Chart this week as ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’ debuts at No1 putting an end to Ubisoft’s 4-week run.

It’s not surprising to see FIFA depose Ubisoft’s ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction’ from top spot with what is the World Cup themed version of the 10th biggest selling game ever in the UK, ‘FIFA 10’. During this week in World Cup Year 2006, the launch of ‘FIFA World Cup Germany 2006’ represented 15% of FIFA 2006’s launch week. ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’, although released on only XB360, PS3, PSP and Wii (compared to 7 formats in 2006), performs in a similar fashion, recording 14.6% of FIFA 10’s launch week. The PS3 version just pips XB360, accounting for 48%, XB360 47% with PSP and Wii making up the rest. It was the other way round at the launch of FIFA 10 with XB360 48% and PS3 46%. At No2 this week is another reinterpretation of a classic with ‘Super Street Fighter IV’ debuting ahead of Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’.

Sales of ‘Just Dance’ dip by only 5% putting it ahead of Ubisoft’s very own ‘Splinter Cell: Conviction’ which falls from No1 to No4 with a 37% drop in sales despite the release of the PC version this week. Sales of the 3 week old PS3 and PC versions of ‘GTA: Episodes from Liberty City’ (?32%) are slowing meaning a dip from No3 to No5 for the Rockstar title. Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ and ‘Wii Sports Resort’ both perform well this week with sales up 20% and 27% respectively, positioning them at No’s 6 and 7. EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ rallies at No8, down 2 places, but managing a 7% rise in sales. ‘Modern Warfare 2’ (+42%) still hasn’t dropped out of the Top 10, boosted by price promotions on Xbox 360, only slipping one place to No9. There is a third new entry in the All Formats Top 10 this week with the HD, next-gen ports of the first two God of War games, ‘God of War Collection’, debuting at No10 on PS3. One other new game makes the All Formats Top 40 this week ? Sega’s ‘Iron Man 2’ at No20.

19/Apr/2010

Ubisoft continue their 2010 chart success with new entry ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction’ No1 this week, having now occupied the top spot five times so far this year, three times in the last three weeks.

Splinter Cell: Conviction was released exclusively on Xbox 360 with the PC version out on the 30th April. Ubisoft’s Wii exclusive ‘Just Dance’ has stepped down to No2 which marks the first time Ubisoft have held both No1 and No2 in the chart. It also marks the first time Ubisoft have had two different titles at No1 two weeks in a row. Rockstar/Take2’s ‘Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City’ sees a massive surge to No3 thanks to the PS3 and PC versions released this week, which means EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ is pushed down to No4. Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ moves up from No6 to No5 this week followed by Square Enix Europe’s ‘Just Cause 2’. Nintendo then hold No7 and No8 with ‘Wii Sports Resort’ and ‘Pokemon Soulsilver’ respectively. Activision Blizzard’s FPS ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ drops back down to No9 after the two week sales boost from the release of the map pack and EA round off the top 10 with ‘FIFA 10’.

Wii gamers can’t stop dancing as ‘Just Dance’ holds on to No1 in the All Formats Chart, handing Ubisoft a total of 4 weeks at No1 in 2010 – the most for any publisher so far this year (ahead of EA with 3 weeks and Sony and Square-Enix with 2 weeks each).

‘Just Dance’ has been the biggest selling Wii game every week this year apart from in week 1 (when it had to contend with Wii Fit Plus). It is also already the 3rd biggest 3rd party Wii game ever in the UK (behind Sega’s Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games and Take 2’s Carnival Funfair Games). All Top 40 titles drop in sales, but sales of ‘Just Dance’ only dip by 7%, the lowest drop out of all the Top 20 games this week. ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ leapfrogs ‘Just Cause 2’, climbing one place to No2 with sales down 28%, while sales of Square-Enix’s title drop by 51% as it slips one place to No3. ‘Modern Warfare 2’ (-46%) is a non-mover at No4 staying ahead of Nintendo’s 5 Top 10 charting games. Nintendo’s biggest selling game this week remains ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-25%) up one place to No5, despite a surge from ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-8%) up 3 places to No6, Pokemon SoulSilver (-42%) and HeartGold (-39%) are both down 2 places to No’s 7 and 9 respectively, while ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (-37%) holds on to No10.

In an extremely quiet week for new releases there are no Top 40 newcomers and next week looks like it could well be 5 weeks at No1 for Ubisoft with the imminent release of ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction’ on Xbox 360.

Easter takes a hold of the games market, with Good Friday signalling a time to settle back, meet the family and play some games. With that in mind, Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ manoeuvres its way back to No1 (+56%) with a third chart-topping week on the Entertainment All Formats (it was No1 in weeks 2 & 3 this year and also claims an impressive 12 out of 13 weeks of the year so far on top of the Entertainment Software Budget Price Top 40).

Square Enix’s ‘Just Cause 2’ (-21%) has to settle for No2 this week, having parachuted straight into No1 at launch last week (although keeps hold of No1 on both 360 and PS3 Full Price Charts). EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ (-7%) remains at No3 and Activision Blizzard celebrate a return to the Top 5 for the first time in 5 weeks with ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ climbing 2 places to No4 (+52%) ? 21 weeks since launch and MW2 still has not dropped out of the Top 10. Nintendo’s ‘Pokemon Soulsilver’ (-37%) drops 3 places to No5, ‘Wii Sports Resort’ climbs 3 places to No6 (+52%) and ‘Pokemon HeartGold’ drops 3 places to No7 (-34%).

‘FIFA 10’ celebrates a return to the Top 10 after 3 weeks just outside, up 4 places to No8 (+70%). There are no new releases within the Top 40, with only P2Games/Ubisoft’s ‘Peppa Pig: Fun and Games’ from last week entering the Top 40 at No27 (+312%). Those looking to find PQube/Zen’s ‘Blazblue: Calamity Trigger’ will be interested to learn that it was the biggest new release of week 13, but is just outside the published Entertainment Software All Prices Top 40 (you can find it on the Entertainment Software Full Price Top 40 at No38 and at No21 on 360 and No19 on PS3 Full Price Charts).

Square Enix Europe rack up their second All Formats No1 this year so far (previous being Final Fantasy XIII) with ‘Just Cause 2’ thanks to their subsidiary Eidos Interactive.

The original Just Cause released almost four years ago just missed out on the top spot, debuting at No2 in the All Formats Chart. Nintendo’s remake of Pokemon Gold and Silver (originally on Gameboy Color) debuts on the DS this week with ‘Pokemon Soulsilver’ at No2 and ‘Pokemon Heartgold’ at No4, with EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ sandwiched in between at No3. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ moves down a place to No5 followed by Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ which bounces back up to No6 from No10. Last week’s No1, Sony’s ‘God of War III’, has dropped down six places to No7 followed by Square Enix’s ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ which has dropped down five places to No8. Nintendo then finish off the Top 10 with ‘Wii Sports Resort’ at No9 and ‘Wii Fit Plus’ at No10. Outside of the Top 10 we have Koch Media’s TV tie-in ‘Prison Break: The Conspiracy’ new at No17 and Ubisoft’s ‘Red Steel 2’ debuting at No34.

Launched exclusively on PS3, ‘God of War III’ outdoes its PS2 predecessor’s launch by 2.65 to 1. Like ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ last week, it is the series’ first true outing on a next-gen format, however it can by no means match Final Fantasy XIII’s spectacular debut which accounted for almost 3 times as many sales (although this was over 5 days and 2 formats while sales for God of War are for Friday and Saturday and PS3-only). ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ sales fall 80% as it slips from No1 to No3, while EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ holds on to the No2 spot, only 2,000 sales away from No1. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ is starting to become a familiar sight at the top of the chart, down one place to No4, while THQ record this week’s only other Top 10 new entry with the post-apocalyptic ‘Metro 2033’. The rest of the Top 10 jostles amongst themselves as ‘Wii Fit Plus’ moves down one place to No6 and ‘Heavy Rain’ slides 3 places to No7. Nintendo’s only Top 10 game this week is ‘Wii Sports Resort’, but it does mange to climb one place to No8, boosted by sales from bundled Wii hardware. ‘Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing’ slows two places to No9 and the unthinkable almost happens ? ‘Modern Warfare 2’ almost falls out of the Top 10 for the first time, down 4 places to No10 this week. EA’s big newcomers this week both sit on the outskirts of the Top 10 with new expansion ‘Dragon Age: Origins ? Awakening’ at No11 and ‘Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight’ at No12. The only other new entry is Capcom’s ‘MotoGP 09/10’ at No21.
