I do want to say something about imagination purely as a tool in the art and science of scaring the crap out of people. The idea isn’t original with me; I heard it expressed by William F. Nolan at the 1979 World Fantasy Convention. Nothing is so frightening as what’s behind the closed door, Nolan said.

純粋に人々を怖がらせる芸術と科学のツールとしての想像力について、言っておきたい。このアイデアは私が独自に考案したものではない。1979年の世界幻想文学大会で、ウィリアム・F・(フランシス)ノーランが表現したものを聞いた。「閉じた扉の向こうに潜むものほど恐ろしいものはない」こうノーランは言った。

You approach the door in the old, deserted house, and you hear something scratching at it. The audience holds its breath along with the protagonist as she/he (more often she) approaches that door. The protagonist throws it open, and there is a ten-foot-tall bug. The audience screams, but this particular scream has an oddly relieved sound to it. “A bug ten feet tall is pretty horrible,” the audience thinks, “but I can deal with a ten-foot-tall bug. I was afraid it might be a hundred feet tall.”

古びた廃屋の扉に近づくと、何かが引っ掻く音が聞こえてくる。観客は主人公たる彼女/彼(多くの場合彼女)がドアに近づくにつれ、息を呑む。主人公がドアを勢いよく開けると、そこには10フィートほどの虫がいた。観客は叫び声をあげるが、この叫び声は奇妙な安堵の響きをも含んでいる。「10フィートの虫は確かに恐ろしい」観客は思う。「でも10フィートの虫ならどうにかなる。100フィートの虫だったら怖かったのに」。
